Words and actions that are fleeting in your perspective, might have a large impact on someone’s life trajectory. At minimum and with the right intention, it might make their day. Give back to others in any way you can to keep our industry flourishing.

As I embark on the career break that is my second round of maternity leave, I find myself reflecting on my professional journey to date working in HR and within the fitness industry, in particular the lessons which have best served me and stood the test of time when it comes to a topic we can all relate to and have experience in – people!

  1. Humans are complex creatures. We are flawed. Our lived experiences differ. We won’t necessarily understand why people do the things that they do. We don’t always get to choose who we work and do business with, so save the emotional energy or judgement and focus on getting the job done, recognising that most of us are inherently good, yet a little odd by nature.
  1. Treat people how they wish to be treated. Having lived my younger years accepting this saying to be true in reverse – to treat people how YOU wish to be treated – this was an epiphany learnt from a CPO mentor which she coins “The Golden Rule”. Any decent behavioral profiling tool will aid you to better understand the people that make up your teams, however in its simplest takeaway, you will reach a mutually beneficial result in life and work much quicker if you go about your interactions meeting people where they are at, and with what makes them tick, in mind.
  1. Be Affable, Available, Adept and Agile. Another one adopted from a respected mentor and leader, which is certainly not rocket science yet should not be underestimated, is that being pleasant to deal with, fast, competent at what you do and picking up the phone will always open doors. We naturally gravitate towards people who we like – be intentional in your work about being likeable (not to be mistaken for people pleasing).
  1. Ask, and you shall receive. Some of the greatest career opportunities and progressions have presented themselves to me because I presented them first. Knowing what you’re capable of, backing yourself and being assertive in what you want (and yes, this often comes harder to females so ladies listen up) keeps you front of mind to people who may very well believe in you, yet are too wrapped up in the chaos of their own world to initiate what’s required for your growth without needing to be nudged.
  1. We are replaceable at work, and irreplaceable at home. It might sound a little doom and gloom, however being exposed in my line of work to more workplace restructures than enviable, as well as taking 13 months off work with my first baby and being somewhat surprised that the show went on so swimmingly without me, this is perhaps the most important lesson of all. Love what you do and give it your absolute all, without the ignorance that you are invincible and can rewind the clock on not being present for the people and moments that matter most.
  1. Pay it forward. Over time, I notice myself becoming more and more grateful for the individuals who have helped and shaped me along the way. When you think about it, we reach almost all outcomes in life via relationships – the good and the bad. Words and actions that are fleeting in your perspective, might have a large impact on someone’s life trajectory. At minimum and with the right intention, it might make their day. Give back to others in any way you can to keep our industry flourishing.
